Its a known fact that Florida recieves more lightning strikes than most places in the country. Tampa has been known as the lightning capital of the world and it has been said that the word Tampa was translated from the phrase "sticks of fire". Last month 3 people were struck by lighting, 2 at the beach and 1 in the Sam's Club parking lot near us.
You can imagine that Tampa International Airpo
rt with its 3300 acres of open space and lots of metal roofs is a requent target for lightning strikes this time of year. Last week during my routine airfield inspection I found one of those strikes, a nice big hole with concrete fragments blown all over the place. This particular strike happened on a terminal ramp not far from one of our airsides.
