Nicewinter Geneology

Every now and then I get the urge to research the Nicewinter name to try and discover its origins, see what it means. You would think such an uncommon name would be easy to track down, but, I'm becoming fairly certain that Nicewinter has its origins in another surname.

The other night I had that urge and decided to google myself. I found that I'm a success story on one of my college's aviation department flyers, found links to our blogs, saw Olivia's birth announcement and came across other Nicewinter names. Many of these items I've found before.

I did come across something that night that's never popped up before, a book titled "Black Rock: Mining Folklore from the Pennsylvania Dutch". Page 237 of this book references the Nicewinters, a family surname that was pronounced Newswender before the Newswenders moved into Columbia county and changed the name to Nicewinter.

I'd love to find a copy of this book that goes in depth about the German heritage of Pennsylvania. I'm also fairly certain that Pottsville, PA may hold a lot of information about the Newswenders, Nicewinters or whichever surname we originated from!
