Winter Gardening.....El Nino Style

Last summer all the great weather forecasters predicted the waters of the equatorial Pacific would continue to warm, creating a phenomenon known as El Nino, and winter weather across the globe would be affected.

In August I had even prognosticated that we would have a wet winter here. We're approaching the middle of December now and the weather has proven to be riding the El Nino roller coaster. Unlike last year, we can't seem to hold on to any decent cool weather. Cold fronts come and go with warm air quickly rushing in behind after a day or two. Yesterday it was overcast, chilly and only made it up to 60 degrees. Today, warm winds are blowing and temperatures have already soared past 80.

Rainfall has been somewhat light compared to past El Nino events. I've only measured 4 inches since November, still above normal for what is suppose to be our dry season. I'm still waiting for that "really really big storm" to come rolling through.

With all these ups and downs it makes it a bit difficult to have a decent garden. Lettuce starts to enjoy the chill and then, whammo.....back to the heat. The one pumpkin vine I left in the ground is somehow still growing and somehow managed to sprout a new baby pumpkin this past week.

I enjoy a nice little roller coaster sometimes.....Big Thunder Mountain, Barnstormer....(OK, just those two really), but this weather one is getting old.
