Garden Game Changer

Its that time of year when I start thinking about what to plant for the spring garden. Seed catalogs start rolling in with lots of new veggies to try, usually though I've already gotten a good idea of what I'm planting.

This year, however, one of my seed catalogs has something so new and so appealing that I just can't resist the urge to grow it. Despite having my mind made up to try and grow watermelons for the first time, this new veggie variety is just too much to pass up.

What could be so fascinating as to change my already made up gardening mind, what veggie could be that exciting that it would completely change the landscape of my spring garden.........only the best kind of potato in the world, the sweet potato!

I've grown sweet potatoes a couple of times before with fairly good results. They grow well down here and are a good crop to grow over the hot summer months. With a few varieties to choose from I've been thinking about growing them again in the future. That idea has gotten rapidly moved up as the "Evangeline" variety has just been introduced and there's only one seed catalog that has it, and guess what...I'm not telling which one until I've ordered my bare roots!!

The Evangeline sweet potato, developed by the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment in Baton Rouge, is apparently the sweetest sweet potato ever grown and resist root knot nematodes commonly found in southern soils.

Hopefully when planting time comes in April our freezes will just be a memory and I'll be able to get growing again!!
