April 17 Garden Journal

Bustling seems to be an understatement in the garden these days. Long gone are the cold spells that made me wonder how I could possibly get anything growing without the help of a green house.

Spring is here and it seems that may be brief with hot humid 90 degree weather starting to be more common with each passing day. The veggies are loving it and I almost have so much going on it may difficult to keep track of soon.

This year I'm going with the idea that I can squeeze as many things into a small space as possible, like letting the watermelon vines spread out around the upward growing cotton plants. The watermelon vines, by the way, are blooming and as of today have 2 baby melons.

It has been suggested that gardener's should plant something new every year, something they've never tried before and I usually do that each planting season. Not only did I try watermelon for the first time, I also decided to squeeze in some red onion bulbs after seeing them fairly cheap at Wal-Mart last week.

Probably the one thing I am most excited about planting this season is a new variety of sweet potato, the evangeline. I've mentioned this tater in previous posts and the bare roots showed up a few days ahead of schedule in the mail last week. They have just been plopped in the ground.

Finally, the unintentional tomato......this was the oops tomato, the one that shows what can happen when your seed just falls somewhere willy nilly in the garden and you just were expecting it or never thought it would happen because you had been so careful after growing the last tomato plants. Either way, I will keep the tomato plant and let it grow up as everything else grows out around it.

Stay tuned for scenes from the garden next time!!!
