Welcome to Planes and Plants, my not so daily log of happenings at the airport and in the garden.
Since it's my weekend, its time to attend to a few garden items. This time of year is mostly preparing for the upcoming fall garden. The garden is covered in a nice blanket of clear plastic in a process known a solarizing. Its meant to kill all the bad microscopic critters that will later help to destroy the fall garden. For you folks up north, its the equivalent of a good winter freeze.
As usual, tomatoes will take the fore front this fall, but in a different format. I'll be growing them in big pots with a mix of organic garden soil and my homemade compost. Keeping them in pots along the fence will give me more room for cucumbers, lettuce and carrots in the main garden and the fence post will help support the tomatoes. I've got 2 varieties started, seed saved from my Wild Oats heirloom gold medal tomato and seeds saved from my Brandywine tomatoes last year. The gold medal tomato is already out in the pot along the fence.
That's about all for now, you'll be learing more about tomatoes as the season goes!
