Hot Summer Garden

It's nearly the middle of July and the garden is down to sweet potatoes and sunflowers. The summer heat with 80 degree nights proved too much for the tomatoes to handle and even the green ones were getting wrinkled and soft. We did, however, enjoy a bunch of really good Amish Paste and Brandywine tomatoes.

The sweet potato vines continue to sprall about the garden and the sunflowers are getting closer to blooming. Blueberry bushes are seeing lots of new growth with the plentiful summer rains and heat. I'm hoping for a bigger crop of berries next spring.

Planning for the fall garden is underway with pumpkins, beets, radish and cumcumbers all on the seed wishlist. I will be trying pumpkins this year for the first time and my research says you can grow them here in Florida. The prefer a soil ph around 7.0 and that's just about what I have. Burpee offers a small variety of pumpking that I will likely try.

Look for pictures of the sweet taters and sunflowers coming soon!!
