March Comes in with a Chill!

In keeping with the spirit of cold air this winter season, the first week of March has brought more unusually chilly weather to garden. Low temperatures the last two mornings have been right at 32 degrees with light coating of frost on the roofs and car windows.

Our backyard gardens aren't the only ones suffering, the commercial tomato growers are struggling to, with a reported 70% loss of the Florida tomato crop. Tomatoes don't like cold at all and temps in the low 40's is enough to cause damage.

Even with this late season frostiness, the cool season veggies are still growing and looking forward to a warm up this week. I'm still hoping for some beets by Easter but the reality is that may not happen.
