The First Tomato!

I had a goal this year of getting the fall tomatoes in early enough to have a Thanksgiving tomato. In the past its usually taken until just about Christmas to get the first one off the vine, mainly because they had a late start into the garden. Of course we can't forget 2004 when they took a September hurricane beating!

High hopes for an earlier harvesting this fall have come through with a record setting pace! The garden peach tomato is aggressively growing and the first tomato came off the vine October 23rd, my earliest yet. This tomato that I was very anxious to try did not disappoint! Its a yellow smooth tasting fruit with a velvety feel (you really have to feel it to believe it). There are over 30 more garden peaches growing on just one of my plants with the bigger beefsteak varieties just starting to fruit. We'll hopefully be enjoying fresh heirloom tomatoes for the next several weeks!!
