Flying Over Memory Lane

A trip to the local downtown general aviation airport for an aviation expo was all that it took to get me thinking about my flying days. It was nice family day and you can check out Julie's blog for those details and our "plane shopping" for Olivia. For a peak into my flying past, keep reading.....

It's been nearly 2 decades since I earned my private pilot's license. I flew 2 days a week during my senior year in high school, usually for about an hour at a time in little Cessna 152. It amazes me today that I actually piloted a small single engine airplane and I did this by myself at times.

I still remember my first solo flight, my fight instructor tricked me during a lesson when he had me land the airplane because he thought something was wrong. When we got to the ramp and parked he hopped out and said "its all yours" (something like that I think). Wow, I couldn't believe I was actually going to take this little airplane into the skies all on my own! It was exciting and I managed to do three "touch and goes".

I have many great flying memories from my year off between high school and college. There's even a VHS video tape my dad shot while we were flying the Cessna 172 together one hot summer afternoon. I still think he dropped the camera on his lap to make one of my landings look harder than it was.

I'll fly again someday when time and money permits. I'll be able to take the girls up for their first flight in a little airplane. Maybe we'll even get that awesome new C-172!! Until then, I'll flip through the pages of my logbook.
